Top 10 Ways to Protect Our Lake

Top 10 Ways to Protect Our Lake

10 - Reduce or eliminate your use of commercial fertilizers, herbicies, pesticides or fungicides.  For natural gardening alternatives visit: www.muskokawaterweb.ca/8/8.2/landscaping.htm

9 - Don’t clear-cut the shoreline! Maintain a natural shoreline including trees to support animal and marine life, and to prevent erosion. For more information visit: www.dfo-mpo.gc.ca/regions/central/pub/shore-rivages-on/index_e.htm

8 - If you spot excessive grooming or have a question about development, call the local Environmental Officer at (705) 789-1751.

7 - Use phosphate-free and bio-degradable cleaning products that are phosphate-free and bio-degradable, to eliminate unnatural products entering our water system.

6 - Reduce the load on your septic tank by conserving water, and ensure your septic system is maintained and re-inspected regularily, to reduce bacterial contamination of our lake.  For more information visit: www.muskokawaterweb.ca/2/2.3/waste_water.htm

5 - Make sure to keep your boat in good repair to reduce oil and gasoline spills into the lake.  One drop of oil can render up to 25 litres of water unfit for drinking!

4 - When boating, always reduce your speed to eliminate the wake around marshes and nesting areas.  Treat both your human and animal neighbours with respect for our mutual enjoyment.

3 - Practice the 3 Rs: Reduce, Re-use and Recycle.

2 - Get to know your neighbours and have their contact information handy.  Form your own neighbourhood watch.
